Schools at Athen
Boys were taught at home by their mother until they were 6-7 years at age.In Athens,the education was left up to the father and responsibility for the child's learning.Student were taught by private schoolmasters.The boys that are wealthy were taken to school by a trusted slave to guide them along to school.The student including girls learned how to write on wax-covered table with a stylus.In Athens,books were very expensive,so they were rear.The student in Athens learned numbers such as addition,sudtraction,multiplication and division.They also had learned about fraction.Student learned the poetries by Homer and a instrument called Lyre.Boys were trained in sport but wealthy children learned how to ride horseback as well as sport.The orther sport that they learned were,wrestling ,using a bow as well as sling and swimming.At the age 14 boys attended a higher school for 4 more yeares.At the age 18,boys went to military school.They grauduated at the age 20.
Athen Daily Life
In Athens and most part of Greece ,men ran the government.They spent a lot of time out of the house while involved in politics.Men also had spent times outside or in the field looking after the crop or harvesting.They sailed,hunt,and trade.All of the chores and the work took men away from their home.Men enjoyed wrestling, horseback riding and the Olympic games.There were parties that men had which the women were not allowed to attend.Women had a littke freedom.Wealthy women hardly ever left the house because they sent slaves to the market.The women in Athens were allowed to attend funerals,wedding and some other religious festival.The most things that Athen women did was looking after the house and the teaching the children.Male slaves guared the women when the men were away.
Marriages in Athen
The day before the wedding,the girl would take a bath from a sacered spring water.The water was poured from a vase a called the "Loutrophorus". Then the girl would worshipped the goddess Artemis.She then has to offer the god a symbol of her childhood such as a toy or a lock of her hair.
Marriage took place around January.Wedding ceremonies stared after dark.The bride would travel from her house to the home of her groom in a chariot or a wagon,if she is poor.The friends of the bride and groom would lit the way with torch if it is still dark.They would then play a musical song to scare the evil spirits away.The bride would eat a piece of fruit at the ceremony to show that food and other basic needs would come upon her husband.All of the marriage would be arranged by the bride's father.The bride would would not see her future husband until the day of the wedding.Girls would get married at the 15 and the husband would be twicw her age.The groom would receive a dowry.If the husband dies ,the dowry and the girl would return home to her father and the mother.
